Register as an Dietitian
Monday 9th August 2010
Reducing the level of cholesterol in the blood is one of the best ways to combat coronary heart disease, an expert has claimed.
Linda Main, dietic adviser for HEART UK, explained that positive changes to diet and lifestyle can lead to "moderate reductions in blood cholesterol levels".
She noted that dieticians should advise people to eat foods that are high in whole grains, as well as fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts and fish, among other things.
"This pattern of eating is rich in vitamins, minerals, trace elements of fibre, all of which are essential for good health," Ms Main stated.
Earlier this year, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published guidance for the food industry which stated that producing healthier food could help to significantly reduce the number of people suffering from heart disease.
According to the NICE research, tens of thousands of lives could be saved if the amount of saturated fats and salt found in food is reduced.
