Register as an Dietitian
Friday 6th August 2010
New research has shown that people can be equally successful at losing weight on either a low-fat or low-carbohydrate diet.
Scientists in the US published their findings in the Annals of Internal Medicine journal this month.
The study could be of interest to those working in dietician jobs as it may provide more options for patients looking to alter their diet and lose weight.
Researchers followed more than 300 people as they undertook either a low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet for a period of two years.
While weight loss in both cases was similar, the authors of the report noted that following a low-carbohydrate diet "is associated with favourable changes in cardiovascular risk factors at two years".
Earlier this week, Tam Fry, a board member of the National Obesity Forum and chair of the Child Growth Foundation, commented that there is more to obesity than eating too much and doing too little exercise.
He stated a genetic predisposition towards your weight can be another factor that affects obesity.
