High heels 'can cause a range of health problems'

Osteoarthritis, knee, leg and back pain can all be caused by wearing high-heeled shoes on a regular basis, it has been stated.
A study published at the end of last month by Iowa State University revealed that wearing and walking in high heels over a prolonged period of time can be a contributory factor in joint degeneration and knee osteoarthritis.
Lorraine Jones, a podiatrist from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, explained why heels can have such a bad effect on your body.
"High-heeled shoes alter your posture, placing 25 per cent more pressure on your knee and hip joints," she said.
Ms Jones advised people who do wear high heels to make sure that they carry out daily calf muscle stretches and suggested wearing trainers or other flat shoes on the way into work.
Anyone working in podiatry jobs will no doubt be aware of the risks and may want to encourage patients to wear shoes with "a comfortable heel and wide toe box", Ms Jones added.
