Refer an Phlebotomist
Thursday 5th August 2010
Scientists have discovered 95 new genes that affect the level of cholesterol found in the bloodstream.
The news could pave the way for the development of new treatments for heart disease and may be of interest to people working as phlebotomists.
Research was carried out by scientists from all over the world and the findings were published in this month's issue of Nature journal.
More than 100,000 people with European ancestry took part in the project, which examined results from 46 previous studies.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, professor Jeremy Pearson, vascular biologist at King's College London and associate medical director of the British Heart Foundation (BHF), commented: "They have found the new genes, now they have to find out how they act and affect the blood to develop targets for new medicines."
According to BHF statistics, 2.5 million people in the UK are living with heart disease and the condition causes 94,000 deaths every year.
