Refer an Hospital Doctor
Thursday 5th August 2010
Hospital doctors and GPs need to make sure that they are "alert" to the possibility of meningitis or septicaemia infection, a leading charity has said.
Adrian Robson, spokesperson for the Meningitis Research Foundation, stressed that early diagnosis is vital when treating these illnesses.
"It is very important that doctors are alert. Meningitis and septicaemia can take up so quickly, so the best way for people to survive is for the diseases to be recognised early and for treatment to start early," he stated.
Earlier this month, the Medical Defence Union published new guidelines for GPs and those working in hospital doctor jobs about diagnosing the conditions.
Among the recommendations to ensure doctors remain alert to the condition are to always rule out a meningitis diagnosis, even when the illness is only briefly considered and to conduct and document full clinical tests.
Statistics on the Meningitis UK website show that approximately 3,000 people are affected by all types of bacterial meningitis each year in the country.
