'More holistic approach needed' for weight loss treatment

Dieticians and other healthcare professionals need to take "a more holistic approach" to weight loss treatment, one expert in the area has claimed.
Susannah Gilbert from Big Matters, a UK-based obesity support website, explained that more support needs to be provided to help people through the weight loss process.
Without extra assistance, for example through healthy cooking classes and support groups, people will continue to struggle to make the necessary lifestyle changes to control their weight effectively, she stated.
Ms Gilbert added that diet and exercise programmes need to take factors such as personal problems into account.
"Unless there is a lot of positive support available for people through the whole weight loss journey many of the underlying issues will remain," she said.
Statistics relating to obesity, diet and physical activity published by the NHS Information Service in February revealed that, in 2008, 24 per cent of men and 25 per cent of women over the age of 16 in England were classed as obese.
