Risk of heart attack from calcium supplements 'relatively small'

There is only a "relatively small" risk of people suffering a heart attack as a result of taking calcium supplements, according to one expert.
Dr Carrie Ruxton, spokesperson for the Health Supplements Information Service and an independent nutritionist, explained that a recent study which suggested that calcium supplements could increase the risk of a heart attack needs to be viewed in context.
"This study was not set up to look at heart problems," she stated. "These are all studies of people which were given supplements and they were followed to look at their bone health. So no data was collected in a very sustained way on heart health," Dr Ruxton added.
Her comments could be of interest to people looking for locum cardiology work, who have been following the report published in the British Medical Journal last month.
Researchers from New Zealand, Scotland and the US collaborated on the study, which stated that taking calcium supplements can be associated with an increased risk of heart attack.
The authors claim that further analysis should be carried out to determine the scale of the issue.
