BHF 'to raise awareness of heart disease among Muslims'

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is set to run a series of training courses for Muslim religious leaders with the aim of raising awareness about heart disease among the Islamic community.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the north-west city is one location that the charity has chosen for the initiative.
Imams and faith leaders in the region will be able to attend special training sessions about how to encourage members of their congregations to make positive lifestyle changes, as well as informing them about risk factors associated with the disease.
Those working in UK cardiac jobs may welcome the scheme, because people from countries such as Pakistan, India and Bangladesh have a greater risk of developing heart disease.
A BHF spokesperson told the newspaper that the Muslim holy month of Ramadan "provides a great opportunity to encourage Muslims to adopt a healthy lifestyle and Imams can play a major role in providing information".
BHF statistics show that in 2007, approximately 2.6 million people in the UK were living with coronary heart disease and that the condition caused 91,000 deaths that year.
