'More awareness needed' over hearing loss

More people need to be made aware that there is help available if your hearing deteriorates, with services and professionals - such as audiologists – on hand to help manage the problem.
Drena O'Malley, resources manager for Deafblind Scotland, explained that many people do not make any provisions for losing their hearing as they get older.
She pointed out that hearing loss is a natural part of the ageing process, however she stressed that if it is combined with loss of sight, it can be a real problem.
"Being cut off is one of the most awful things that can happen in life," Ms O'Malley stated.
However, she added that people can take steps while they are young and able to prepare for potential sensory loss, such as by learning alternative communication methods.
According to research released by Sense earlier this month, the number of deafblind people in the UK is set to grow by 60 per cent over the next 20 years.
