The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued new guidance relating to care for cancer patients whose illness has spread from an unknown primary location.
According to the organisation, patients who are diagnosed with cancer of unknown primary (CUP) often do not receive the same level of care as other cancer patients.
By employing people in specialist hospital doctor jobs and nursing roles, NICE hopes to improve patient care in this area.
The guidelines are calling for every cancer care unit in the UK to set up a specialist CUP team who will be tasked with looking after all patients who receive this diagnosis.
Dr Richard Osborne, lead clinician in the Guideline Development Group and consultant in medical oncology at the Dorset Cancer Centre, welcomed the proposals.
He stated that the guidance will provide "a sound basis for healthcare professionals to ensure patients are informed and their care is centred around their needs and wishes".
According to Cancer Research UK, there are three different types of CUP tumours. These are melanoma, lymphoma and carcinoma.
