Scottish hospitals 'need more doctors'

Scottish hospitals are facing a shortage of junior doctors, it has been reported.
Following the latest round of recruitment, there are approximately 100 hospital doctor jobs still available in Scotland.
The Herald Scotland revealed that the number of applications for posts in the country fell dramatically this year - with 2,940 applicants for 505 jobs, compared with 6,017 applications for 583 positions in 2009.
Dr Gordon Lehany, chairman of the British Medical Association's (BMA's) Scottish Junior Doctors Committee, told the newspaper that he is concerned by the drop in applicants.
"The thing that worries me is that in Scotland we have not previously had problems attracting people and everyone felt it was fine," he said.
Certain specialities received fewer applicants than there were positions, the news provider highlighted, citing the example of clinical genetics where just one candidate applied when there were two jobs available.
Earlier this year, the BMA Scotland called for the NHS Education for Scotland to create more training positions in remote and rural GP practices as part of its report entitled The Way Ahead.
