Pharmacists 'should be aware of diverse career options'

Students training as pharmacists should be made more aware of the variety of career paths they can take with the training.
This is according to Adnan Khan, a pharmacist and PhD student, who wrote for C+D magazine that not enough is done to promote jobs in fields such as public health or industrial pharmacy.
He noted that pharmacists have a broad skill base and could work for organisations such as the Ministry of Defence as a biotechnologist or in public health with the World Health Organisation.
Mr Khan added that the Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry should ensure that opportunities are available for pharmacists to follow a career in industry.
Currently, there are not enough options, particularly in terms of industrial pre-reg places, he stated.
In an article for the publication earlier this month, Chris Chapman pointed out that a recent report into the disparity in health care between affluent and poor areas could lead to pharmacists taking on an increasingly important role within the NHS.
