Dieticians 'need to encourage lifestyle changes'

Those working in a dietician job need to encourage their patients to make wholesale lifestyle changes rather than seek a "quick-fix" option.
Sian Porter, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association (BDA), explained that it is important for dieticians to point out that these lifestyle changes do not have to be big.
"It's not just about putting on lycra and going to the gym, it's things like when you go to the supermarket, park your car as far away from the door as possible," she stated.
Ms Porter noted that those seeking dietician jobs should be prepared for their patients to expect the weight-loss process to be more difficult than it actually is.
They will then need to alter this perception to encourage them to make the changes required to improve their health, she added.
Research released by the NHS Information Centre earlier this year revealed that, in 2008, just 25 per cent of men and 29 per cent of women stated that they were consuming the government-recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
