A trade association has called for greater clarification from the government concerning the role of pharmacies in healthcare provision.
According to the National Pharmacy Association (NPA), which has roots tracing back to 1921, there is still confusion over plans set out by the new administration.
During a recent board meeting, chairman of the organisation Ian Facer noted that while the Conservative/ Liberal Democrat coalition has confirmed it will not use the pharmacy white paper that was commissioned by Labour, it has not yet specified an alternative strategy.
He said he hoped calls sent by the NPA will "inject some urgency into policy development for community pharmacy so that our sector's potential is not overlooked in these critical early days of the new administration".
In order to aid the situation, Mr Facer has requested a meeting between members of the NPA and ministers to discuss the future of such healthcare provision.
