The work of biomedical researchers could lead to new treatments for HIV, it has been noted.
According to Annabel Kanabus, director of the charity AVERT, progress being made in the area is "very exciting".
However, she noted the development of different vaccines and other products and methods will not be immediate.
She stated: "They haven't even started human testing. Even once they start testing something on humans, you are talking about many, many years of going through several stages of clinical trials."
Her comments came after scientists discovered that two powerful antibodies were found to neutralise more than 90 per cent of HIV-1 isolates.
Their research was published in the journal Science this month.
Meanwhile, a team of biomedical scientists working at Imperial College London revealed earlier this year they had grown a crystal that reveals the structure of an enzyme called integrase, which is found in retroviruses like HIV.
