A link between human papillomaviruses (HPVs) and skin cancer has been discovered by biomedical researchers.
Led by Professor Margaret Karagas of the Dartmouth Medical School in the US, the team revealed HPV infection heightens the risk of developing certain skin cancers.
This effect is worsened, they claimed, if patients are taking immunosuppression drugs.
Their discoveries, which were published on bmj.com, were based on the analysis of data from 2,366 people.
Among their findings was that individuals with squamous cell carcinoma were 1.4 times more likely to have two to three types of HPV compared with the control group.
"Our results raise the possibility of reducing the health and economic burden of these cancers through prevention or treatment of human papillomavirus infection," the authors state.
According to the NHS, non-melanoma skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the UK and there are around 100,000 new cases each year.
