Refer an Hospital Doctor
Thursday 8th July 2010
Hospital doctors are among the medical professionals who should receive special training so they can deal better with cases of self-harm.
This is according to YoungMinds' director of campaigns Lucie Russell, who suggested that thousands of young people are involved in such destructive activity and many are not receiving the help they need.
She said: "This training must address the issues that underline mental health problems such as sexual abuse and violence and should include early intervention support to care for young people who are suffering."
As well as hospital doctors, accident and emergency staff are among those who should receive guidance on dealing with the issue, Ms Russell added.
Her comments followed the recent publication of a report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, which showed less than half of its members felt they or their team had sufficient training to undertake assessments of people who had harmed themselves.
