Anxious people 'at greater risk of cardiac disease'

People may be more at risk of requiring the services of cardiac physiology experts if they suffer from anxiety.
This is according to research conducted by a team from the US, who suggested there is a 74 per cent increased chance of cardiovascular events in those with an anxiety disorder.
Their findings, which were published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, were based on a study of more than 1,000 individuals.
Authors of the analysis state that the link could be connected to the fact that patients with anxiety are more likely to visit a doctor and it is therefore more probable they will receive diagnosis of stroke or heart attack.
However, it is also possible that there is a common underlying factor that makes people susceptible to both heart disease and anxiety.
Lead author Dr Elisabeth Martens said: "Evaluation and treatment of anxiety may also be considered as part of the comprehensive management of patients with coronary heart disease."
According to the British Heart Foundation, heart and circulatory disease are the UK's biggest killers.
