Improving understanding of deafness is crucial, audiologist says

It is vital to improve people's understanding of deafness, it has been claimed.
Writing on thisiskent.co.uk, audiologist and partner of Sevenoaks Hearing Care Centre Matt Cannon said the problem affects around nine million people in the UK and its impact can have "life-changing implications".
He stated: "My clients often relay feelings of frustration and perhaps most significantly, isolation and loneliness."
While blindness might be recognised by the presence of a cane or guide dog, deafness is "an invisible disability", he noted.
Mr Cannon added that figures suggest people cope with hearing loss, particularly when it is age-related, for an average of seven years before they seek help.
He went on to say he hopes the stigma of deafness is now dissipating.
Recently, RNID released the findings of a study which revealed that six-in-ten Britons find it "embarrassing" to start conversations with people who are hard of hearing.
