Register as an Dietitian
Monday 28th June 2010
Children should be taught early about how to eat a healthy diet in order to set a pattern for life.
This is the opinion of Lucy Jones, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association.
She explained that if children get used to eating badly, it can be very difficult to get them to change their habits as they get older.
Instead, an eating pattern of three meals a day with a healthy snack should become a normal part of their lifestyle from the start.
Ms Jones said that ideally, messages about this kind of healthy eating should be given to children during their first year, meaning early advice from dieticians to parents may be beneficial.
Datamonitor has reported that more than a third of children in the UK aged from five to 13 are overweight.
According to other data from the NHS Information Centre, 15.2 per cent of girls between the ages of two and 15 were obese in 2008. For boys, the figure was 16.8 per cent.
In the same year, 24 per cent of men and 25 per cent of women aged 16 or older were obese.
