Refer an Audiologist
Thursday 24th June 2010
People who listen to MP3 players may be more likely to require the help of someone with an audiology job.
According to new research from a team at Ghent University in Belgium, such activity causes temporary changes in hearing sensitivity which can result in long-term harm.
Based on a study of 60 young people, the scientists concluded that over-stimulation of hair cells within the ear occurs even at varying volume levels.
In addition, the authors - who published their findings in the Archives of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery journal - said short periods of listening can be damaging too.
Lead researcher Hannah Kempler remarked: "It is well known that excessive occupational noise exposure can lead to noise-induced hearing loss."
She added that the primary damage is concentrated on the outer hair cells because they are more vulnerable to acoustic over-stimulation.
Recently, warnings were issued over the risks to people's hearing posed by the vuvuzelas being used at the World Cup in South Africa.
