People with biomedical research jobs in Scotland have received a boost.
It has been confirmed that the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh is to become a world-leading centre for cancer studies.
As a result of its elevated status, the institution will receive an additional £5.5 million a year in funding, allowing it to conduct more research and attract talent from across the globe.
Responding to the development, David Cameron, professor of oncology and head of cancer services at NHS Lothian, said it is "very exciting".
He added: "The new centre will help researchers and clinicians to collaborate and work together to improve the lives of cancer patients across the Lothians and Scotland."
The expert noted that by building closer links between doctors and scientists, it is hoped knowledge about the disease will be increased and the pace of research will rise.
Providing a comprehensive range of services, the Western General Hospital has around 570 beds.
