A nurse who helped achieve a significant reduction in superbugs has explained her approach to tackling hospital hygiene problems.
Em Wilkinson-Brice spent the last six years as deputy director of nursing in Derby and she told the Derby Evening Telegraph it is important to begin with the basics.
She worked with those in medical jobs in the hospital as well as GPs to ensure patients only received antibiotics when they were needed, while 'modern housekeepers' were introduced to ensure wards were kept clean.
And Ms Wilkinson-Brice explained she has always tried to bear patients in mind, stating: "When I talk to patients they want to be safe, to eat good hospital food and for staff to be kind and compassionate."
Thanks largely to her efforts, cases of MRSA declined by 60 per cent in Derby's hospitals - which together have nearly 1,200 beds and serve a population of around 600,000 people - between 2006 and 2008.
