Refer an Audiologist
Tuesday 15th June 2010
An instrument commonly used among South African football fans could damage people's hearing, an audiologist has warned.
A symbol of this year's World Cup - which began last week and will run until July 11th - the vuvuzela is a plastic horn capable of producing loud sounds.
Commenting on the issue, Robert Beiny, UK and European audiologist of the year, said the device can produce noises twice the volume of a cowbell.
In order to reduce the chances of sustaining damage to their hearing, the medical expert advised lovers of the sport to give their ears a break during half time, or to take earplugs if they are going to the live games.
He noted that once damage has been done, it is irreversible and for this reason "prevention is key".
Mr Beiny added: "It's not just while sitting in the stands at a match that hearing damage can happen. Our ears can be exposed to damaging noise levels when in the pub surrounded by excited cheering fans."
