Register as an Dietitian
Monday 14th June 2010
The health of women's bones could be affected by fad diets, a nutritionist has suggested.
According to Fiona Hunter, females are at a greater risk of suffering from health problems connected with their bones if they engage in unhealthy weight loss programmes, the Mirror reports.
She said: "It is important for women to get enough calcium in their diet in their 20s and 30s whilst they can still lay down new calcium deposits."
The expert added that after this time if insufficient calcium is absorbed from the diet alone, the body will naturally begin taking it from existing bone deposits.
This can lead to "serious health problems" in later life, she noted.
Ms Hunter's comments came after a study revealed that nearly half of 4,500 British women polled had no idea if bone disease ran in their families.
As well as causing problems with bones, it is known that fad dieting can sometimes result in hair loss.
