New health secretary makes superbug pledge

Health secretary Andrew Lansley has pledged to help those in medical jobs eliminate superbugs from hospitals.
He criticised the previous government for calling for a 30 per cent reduction in infections, arguing the only acceptable way to approach the problem is with a "zero-tolerance" strategy.
"I have spent too long with too many people who have lost loved ones to healthcare-associated infections not to be determined to act on this," said Mr Lansley, adding there is "no tolerable level" of infections that can be prevented.
The politician highlighted his recent move to ensure data on MRSA bloodstream and C Diff infections is published and he welcomed the objective of the NHS in the south-east to eradicate such preventable problems by next year.
Mr Lansley was first elected as an MP in 1997 and served as shadow health secretary from 2003, before being chosen for the cabinet position when the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition came to power.
