Refer an Podiatrist
Monday 7th June 2010
A podiatrist has warned women that certain shoes can have a negative effect on their health.
Lorraine Jones said footwear with heels above one-and-a-half inches can lead to pain in the balls of the feet if they are worn regularly, the Daily Mail reports.
In addition, they can cause back ache, corns, deformed toes and sprained ankles, the medical expert noted.
She pointed out that donning such attire forces people's weight forward, meaning they put more pressure on the front of the foot, rather than it being evenly distributed.
Ms Jones said: "This can create a shortening in the Achilles tendon and toes will be scrunched together and bent upward."
After a long period of time, this can result in hamstring muscles in the back of the legs being damaged, she noted.
The podiatrist concluded by suggesting that people wear these kinds of shoes in moderation.
Recently, the Gloucestershire Gazette revealed a number of fellow foot experts are to begin working in the new West Gate Health Centre later this month.
