Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Monday 7th June 2010
The likelihood that people will have to use the services of people with cardiac physiology jobs rises as air pollution gets worse.
This is according to research conducted by a team at Monash University in Melbourne, who found a direct link between the increase of airborne particles and a person's chances of having a heart attack.
Specks of dust, soot and other pollutants that can be inhaled deep into the lungs are thought to be the cause.
However, the study was not conclusive because the team behind it did not examine whether participants also smoked or had other risk factors for cardiac problems.
The research came as the UK faces possible fines of £300 million from the European Commission over the quality of air in London.
In a warning to member states, the Commission - which is currently headed by president Jose Manuel Barroso - noted that targets for air quality must be met otherwise sanctions will be implemented.
