Register as an Dietitian
Thursday 3rd June 2010
It is not necessary to rely on supplements to get all of one's nutrients.
According to dietician Dr Carrie Ruxton, women can get all their essential nutrients just by eating properly.
Dr Ruxton, who is an independent nutrition adviser to the Health Supplements Information Service, said that multivitamins are a good way of ensuring women get everything they need while they are trying to improve their diets.
She explained that since many people do not eat as they should, or have special dietary needs as a result of conditions such as pregnancy, multivitamins have their use.
But she noted that it is possible to eat well enough so as not to need them.
Dr Ruxton was commenting after Nutrition Bulletin reported a study which found that most British women consume too much salt and saturated fat and not enough fruit, vegetables, fibre and oily fish.
She suggested that fish oil supplements could be a good idea for people who do not eat fish as part of their normal diet.
