Medically unexplained hearing difficulties 'common problem for audiologists'

People with audiology jobs often see patients who have medically unexplained hearing problems, it has been claimed.
According to research conducted at Bristol University and published in the International Journal of Audiology, individuals with such difficulties account for at least ten per cent of outpatient presentations.
One of the conditions that falls into this category is King-Kopetzky syndrome and it describes hearing restrictions that are reported despite normal audiometric thresholds.
The team found that most people who seek help have issues in the presence of background noise but have normal hearing sensitivity.
Dr Helen Pryce, who was involved in the study, said: "This suggests that psychosocial features are more important than audiological features in determining who will seek help with medically unexplained hearing difficulties."
Hearing impairment is common in the UK and the Royal National Institute for Deaf People estimates that nearly nine million people are affected by it.
