New technology developed in Scotland may help people with biomedical science jobs, those behind the research suggest.
A team from the Centre for Biophotonics of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences has created a microscope that uses a less complex laser system than was previously available.
It is said to be able to produce highly detailed images of cells, tissues and drugs in an easier and cheaper way than other devices can.
The instrument was designed and built by Dr Gail McConnell - reader and academic fellow - and post-doctoral researcher Dr Wei Zhang.
Commenting on the microscope, Dr McConnell remarked: "[It] opens up new vistas in live cell imaging and provides biomedical researchers with the unparalleled ability to study biological function, which provides a unique insight into the fundamental spark of life."
The Centre for Biophotonics is headquartered on Taylor Street in Glasgow and is currently undergoing improvements.
