There needs to be an increased emphasis on biomedical research into pancreatic cancer, according to one expert.
Chief executive of Pancreatic Cancer UK Alex Ford suggested that there is currently a lack of finance available for such studies both in the UK and abroad.
She remarked: "After the sad death of Patrick Swayze, people were coming to us and saying 'what is the pancreas?'"
It is clear that there is a lot of work to be done to put the issue "on the radar" and to increase understanding of the problem, Ms Ford noted.
Her comments followed the publication of a study conducted by a team from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre, which revealed that the more alcohol a man consumes, the greater his risk of developing the disease.
It was discovered that males who drank the intoxicant increased their chances of pancreatic cancer by between 1.5 and six times compared with those who did not.
