Advice from dieticians 'could benefit asthma sufferers'
Following the guidance of those in dietician jobs may help ensure the treatment of asthma is more effective.
Research relations manager at Asthma UK Dr Elaine Vickers noted that eating a healthy, balanced range of foods can ensure people have more control over symptoms, while regular exercise is also important.
She made the comments after research presented at the international conference of the American Thoracic Society indicated high-fat meals should be avoided by asthma sufferers.
Australian researchers found airway inflammation to be a problem a matter of hours after consuming such a meal, while the response to medication also appeared to be inhibited.
According to Dr Vickers, foods that are high in sugar as well as fat should be kept to a minimum.
"This research suggests that in addition to long-term detrimental effects on our heart and other organs, a high-fat diet could be adding to the severity of asthma symptoms," she said.
