More than a third of those in pharmacy jobs in the UK have witnessed a crime at work, it has been found.
According to research conducted by Chemist + Druggist and the Pharmacists' Defence Association (PDA) Union, shoplifting and theft were among the most common occurrences, with vandalism and prescription fraud also cited.
More than 520 pharmacists responded to the survey, with 28 per cent having seen or been a victim of crime.
PDA director John Murphy called for the Department of Health to take steps to protect those in pharmacy jobs, as employers are required to ensure their staff are safe.
"The government ought to apply similar rigors to services like pharmacy and provide some protection, as they do in NHS properties," he said.
Full members of the PDA can join its union for free and the body aims to represent the views and interests of employee and locum pharmacists.
