A team of biomedical researchers are to focus on hospital infections in a bid to prevent them.
As part of a project based at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, a £3.5 million unit will be used to examine bugs like MRSA, the BBC reports.
With around 20 staff, the Biomedical Research Unit into Digestive Diseases will engage in patient-based analysis.
According to Professor Robin Spiller, it is positioned strategically close to wards and university academic departments.
Commenting on the initiative, he said: "We have created a patient advisory group and through regular meetings with patients we will try to identify things that are problems and try and make sure taking part is easy and a rewarding experience."
The scheme is a joint venture involving the National Institute of Health Research, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - which employs more than 13,000 members of staff and provides services to 2.5 million people.
