Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 19th May 2010
People with jobs as dieticians may want to heed a warning issued by the head of policy at the Soil Association.
According to Emma Hockridge, people need to be careful concerning how much pesticide they are exposed to in their food.
She said there remains considerable uncertainty about the effect of such chemicals on human health.
The expert made her comments following the release of research conducted by scientists from the University of Montreal and Harvard University.
In a study published in the journal Paediatrics, it was suggested that organophosphate pesticides are associated with an increased risk of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children.
Talking about the substances, Ms Hockridge said: "They have been linked to Alzheimer's disease, learning difficulties in children and a large number of farmers have been campaigning for recognition of the range of neurological problems they have suffered."
Consumers should try to get food that is grown without pesticides or chemical fertilisers, she advised.
