Refer an Audiologist
Monday 17th May 2010
An audiologist is among those to have been involved in the creation of a new product designed to enable people to hear things more clearly.
The so-called 'social spheres' aim to cut out the background noise in bars and clubs by capturing and amplifying the conversation of the people nearby.
They are the brainchild of Napier University student Elaine McLuskey, who worked with an audiologist at Donaldson's School in Edinburgh and the Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters when devising the transparent helmets.
Margaret Kinsman from the association - which aims to enhance British Sign Language/English interpreting services in Scotland - commended the project.
She said: "Elaine has produced some innovative designs based on the aged-old problem faced by us all at some point in our daily life - and one which still harbours negativity - not being able to hear," the Herald reports.
Meanwhile, Ms McLuskey noted that her research suggested a person's environment can be more disabling than a hearing impairment in some cases, which is what prompted her to come up with the idea.
