Register as an Dietitian
Monday 17th May 2010
Dieticians and other medical professionals may struggle when they are testing patients for food allergies, it has been suggested.
According to Sharla Race, editor of Foodcanmakeyouill.co.uk, there is little consensus concerning what intolerance to certain products is and how to assess people for it.
Her comments follow the release of research in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which suggested that half of the patients it analysed had been misdiagnosed as having an intolerance or allergy.
The findings showed that those who were diagnosed had a less than 50 per cent likelihood of really being allergic.
Ms Race remarked: "There is little agreement in the medical profession on what intolerance is and how to test for it let alone how it progresses."
She went on to say that while people's bodies have a good defence system in place, ingesting manmade chemicals is "simply not a natural state for us".
