Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Monday 17th May 2010
Scientists have been trialling the use of a new type of implantable defibrillator that can detect and correct irregular heartbeats.
A team has been working on the device, which avoids the need for connective wires that go through the heart, the Wall Street Journal reports.
While conventional instruments involve leads which are threaded through veins into the heart and can consequently cause complications, the new technology uses a connector which is placed under the skin adjacent to the muscle.
The specialists responsible for its creation claim it may become an attractive option for people with cardiac physiology jobs.
Their research was presented at a meeting of the Heart Rhythm Society in Denver and was published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.
According to Richard Page, president of the society - which claims to be a leader in education and advocacy for cardiac arrhythmia professionals and patients - the device is "truly innovative".
