Register as an Dietitian
Friday 14th May 2010
In advice to dieticians and others in positions of responsibility concerning the provision of information on nutrition, an expert has said individual foods should not be demonised.
According to Barbara Gallani, Food and Drink Federation director of food safety and science, this approach does not help consumers to build a realistic approach to their eating.
Her comments follow the release of reports earlier this month that a string of nurseries have banned children from sweets or cake to celebrate birthdays.
Instead, such items must be handed to parents at the end of the day.
The Pre-School Nutrition Project was set up by Knowsley Borough Council and Chester University and it sets out strict rules on healthy eating and nutrition for nurseries to follow.
Ms Gallani remarked: "The key to good health is a balanced and varied diet, in the context of a healthy lifestyle that includes plenty of physical activity."
