Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Thursday 13th May 2010
Pollution in the air may contribute to instances of cardiac problems, it has been suggested.
According to June Davison, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, there is a relationship between the two.
Her comments followed the release of a statement from the American Heart Association, which claimed that pollution of this kind is a risk factor for heart disease.
It noted that exposure to fine particle matter for a few hours or weeks can trigger cardiovascular deaths, heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and irregular heartbeats.
The organisation added that some individuals are more susceptible to this than others.
Ms Davison said: "It is increasingly being recognised there is a relationship between air pollution and heart and circulatory disease and it appears that it may exacerbate heart problems in those already diagnosed with heart disease."
She went on to advise that when localised air pollution is high, this group of people should try and reduce their exposure by avoiding being outside for long periods of time.
