Working overtime 'can affect cardiac health'

People who work overtime may be more likely to require the services of a cardiac physiologist.
New research published in the European Heart Journal suggests that doing extra hours can put individuals at a greater risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).
The Whitehall II study followed more than 10,000 civil servants in London and discovered that those who worked three or more hours longer than a normal, seven-hour day had a 60 per cent higher risk of such health problems.
Dr Marianna Virtanen, an epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University College London, remarked: "The association between long hours and CHD was independent of a range of risk factors that we measured at the start of the study."
These included smoking, being overweight or having high cholesterol, the expert noted.
More research is needed to confirm the findings, Dr Virtanen added.
CHD is the UK's biggest killer and around 300,000 people have a heart attack each year, according to the NHS.
