Biomedical science 'could be one step closer to Aids vaccine'

Breakthroughs being achieved by biomedical scientists could be making the possibility of an Aids vaccine more likely.
This is according to Annabel Kanabus, director of AVERT, who said that such a development may only be possible thanks to the various investigations being undertaken by experts.
Her comments were made following the release of findings from a team in the US, who discovered that a minority of individuals known as elite controllers produce killer T-cells - a type of white blood cell that battles infections.
It was also noted that a gene called HLA-B57 was present in elite controllers.
Ms Kanabus remarked: "It's a bit like a jigsaw - you need to have lots of different bits and, when they all fit together, then you make your breakthrough, which might be a vaccine or improved treatment."
Things like new drugs are not developed on the basis of individual studies, she stated.
