A team of biomedical scientists have revealed they are encouraged by the results of clinical trials they have been conducting on multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
The experts, who are from the University of Bristol, tested six people at Frenchay Hospital, the BBC reports.
They injected the individuals with stem cells harvested from their own bone marrow and found this increased nerve function by up to a fifth.
However, team leader Professor Neil Scolding emphasised that the work is still in its early stages.
He remarked: "We didn't see patients throwing away their wheelchairs [or] throwing away their walking sticks. The symptoms that the patients had didn't change a great deal."
Rather, the patients did not get worse as fast as they may have been expected to, he added.
Further investigation is required, the expert noted.
A neurological condition, MS affects around 85,000 people in the UK and in most cases, symptoms emerge between the ages of 20 and 40.
