Retired doctor pays for radiography equipment to help Ugandans

A retired medic who paid to replace radiography equipment that had broken in a Ugandan hospital has been recognised.
Dr Jim McWhirter received a Magic of Rotary Award for his efforts, the Henley Standard reports.
The 65-year-old became involved with the Rotary Doctor Bank, which provides qualified medical staff to developing countries, after he gave up his job.
He worked with the Kamuli Missions Hospital in Uganda and while he was there, its X-ray machine broke down.
Dr McWhither resolved to replace it using his own money and delivered the new device in person.
The Kamuli Missions Hospital has around 160 beds and provides services to a population of 330,000.
As well as housing a nurses training school and an Aids counselling centre, it has an operating theatre and pharmacy, among other things.
Like many other medical centres on the continent, the range of conditions it has to deal with is wide.
