Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Tuesday 4th May 2010
A group of scientists have made a breakthrough which may have repercussions for those with cardiac physiology jobs.
In a combined study involving researchers at the University of Bristol and the University of Udine, experts successfully extracted stem cells from heart bypass surgery.
They hope that such cells will be used in the treatment of future cardiac problems by stimulating the growth of new arteries.
Speaking to the BBC, lead researcher Professor Paolo Madeddu said: "This is the first time that anyone has been able to extract stem cells from sections of vein left over from heart bypass operations."
However, other medics have noted that much more work needs to be done before this type of cell could be used widely for humans.
The study was funded jointly by the British Heart Foundation and the UK's National Institute for Health Research, which was established as part of the government's Best Research for Best Health strategy.
