Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 27th April 2010
A dietician has said that salt labelling on food needs to be improved.
According to Katherine Jenna, nutritionist at the Consensus Action on Salt and Health, there is confusion among consumers about the information on products.
Her comments were made in the wake of the release of a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which suggested that carbohydrates and added sugars are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Ms Jenna remarked: "Certainly, all food should be clearly labelled with accurate portion sizes, so that people can see what they are eating when they purchase processed food."
She added that families do not always have time to study in detail the information about nutrition which is contained on packets to try and work out how healthy they are.
Mothers and fathers are often in a rush when they are doing the shopping, she noted.
