Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Monday 26th April 2010
Birmingham Children's Hospital (BCH) wants to become a national centre of excellence for heart surgery.
It intends to be one of a small number of such places that are being developed as a part of a shake up by the NHS.
The National Commissioning Group is calling for the 11 facilities that currently offer such services to be reduced and the Birmingham facility expects to be one of this new generation.
According to Fiona Reynolds, paediatric intensive care consultant, the centre has a skilled team of cardiac physiologists who specialise in treating babies and children.
She added: "Our intensive care unit is one of the biggest in the country and we plan on expanding this from 20 to 31 beds and plan to build a brand new 'hybrid' operating theatre."
BCH has roots tracing back to 1862, when physician and reformer Thomas Heslop founded the Birmingham and Midland Free Hospital for Sick Children.
