Refer an Audiologist
Thursday 22nd April 2010
People who find they are unable to hear as well as they used to should seek the advice of audiologists.
This is according to Emma Harrison, director of public engagement at membership charity RNID, who said that delaying this process can lead to problems.
She commented: "People often take up to 15 years to deal with their hearing loss but it's important to take action early to get fitted with a hearing aid and avoid experiencing unnecessary isolation."
Ms Harrison went on to state that digital hearing aids are available on the NHS and they help individuals by amplifying sounds they would otherwise struggle to detect.
She also pointed out that 55 per cent of the over 60s have age-related deafness, with some cases being accelerated by exposure to noise at work.
The expert was speaking following reports that a new hi-tech hearing aid which can tune into bird song has been launched in the UK.
