People who eat high amounts of added sugar may be increasing the likelihood that they will need to use the services of medical professionals with cardiac physiology jobs.
According to research conducted by a team at Emory University, added sugars in processed foods and drinks raise the risks of cardiovascular disease.
Their study, which was published in the American Medical Association, found that people who consumed more of the substance had higher triglyceride levels.
Co-author of the findings Miriam Vos said: "Just like eating a high-fat diet can increase your levels of triglycerides and high cholesterol, eating sugar can also affect those same lipids."
She added that it is important for people to start assessing how much sugar they are getting and possible ways of reducing this in order to promote their long-term health.
Research published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that women can increase their risk of heart problems by eating a diet rich in high glycemic index carbohydrates.
